History of Virtual Reality
The concept of creating an artificial environment that simulates real-world experiences dates back to the 19th century. However, it was not until the 1960s that virtual reality technology began to take shape.
In 1962, Ivan Sutherland created “Skywriter,” a program that allowed users to draw on a blackboard in a virtual environment. This was followed by “The Sword of Damocles,” which simulated a realistic sword swinging above the user’s head.
In the 1970s, computer scientists Jaron Lanier and Michael Nielsen developed the first VR head-mounted display (HMD) at the University of California, Santa Barbara. This device allowed users to experience a simulated environment in real-time.
In 1983, Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar, developed the first VR system that used computer graphics to create a three-dimensional environment.
In the 1990s, virtual reality technology began to gain traction in the gaming industry. Sony’s PlayStation released the first VR headset in 1994, which allowed users to experience immersive gaming environments. However, it was not until 1998 that the first commercial VR system, the Virtual Theater System (VTS), was developed by Sega and Yamaha.
