Virtual reality (VR) technology has been around for several decades, but the first VR headset was created in the 1960s.
The first VR headset was called the Sword of Damocles, and it was developed by a team at the University of Utah in the late 1960s.
The Sword of Damocles was a simple device that used a projector to display stereoscopic images onto two screens mounted on a frame above the user’s head.
The user would wear a helmet with holes cut out for their eyes, and they would look through the screens to experience a virtual environment.
Although the Sword of Damocles was a pioneering device, it had several limitations. For example, the images were projected onto flat screens, which meant that the user could only see a 2D representation of the virtual world.
Additionally, the headset was quite heavy and cumbersome, making it difficult for users to wear for extended periods.
Despite these limitations, the Sword of Damocles marked the beginning of VR technology and paved the way for more advanced devices in the future.
In the decades that followed, researchers and engineers continued to improve upon the Sword of Damocles design, eventually leading to modern VR headsets like the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR.
